Greg Lauren was upcycling since the start of his fashion label, even before we called it that. Also the term "sustainable" wasn't as trendy back then. Lauren recontextualizes and subverts menswear archetypes, cutting Kimonos out of vintage army blankets or tearing apart and reconstructing vintage rowing blazers. Now, of course, Lauren is leaning into his make-do-and-mend instincts more than ever. Earlier in 2020, he introduced GL Scraps, a new project, in which his team repurposes all of their leftover fabric bits and pieces ; they could be off-cuts of vintage denim, linen, wool. Sometimes the scraps are sewn into patchwork designs on trousers or jackets, or Lauren’s team will arrange them side by side, like puzzle pieces, to create actual bolts of yardage, which they call Scrapwork.
